Squatting problem Now Online in the Philippines, August 28, 2000
"… Meanwhile, lawyer JJ Disini of Disini & Disini Law
Office said that a Philippine anti-cyber squatting law is needed, though
he criticized the bill filed by Sotto. Disini had acted as legal counsel
for initial Love Bug suspect Reonel Ramones. 'I think we should have a
law on cybersquatting to give relief to victims of cybersquatting. But
we should not make the act of cybersquatting a crime as suggested by a
bill filed by Senator Sotto. If so, it would be anti-Filipino because
a foreigner can always commence a criminal prosecution of a Filipino under
that law. On the other hand, a Filipino won't have a similar remedy against
a foreign cybersquatting unless he's in the Philippines. The bottom line
is that only Filipinos will go to jail for cybersquatting under the proposed
bill', he said.
Disini also said that our lawmakers should carefully
study the anti-cybersquatting laws in other countries for consistency."
